All about Ember

Summer in Houghton, MI was supposed to be beautiful. Sunny days, clear water, and dense forests, what more could anyone ask? Thus, I decided that the summer of 1999 was to be spent in my cheap apartment, working at the MTU News Bureau, and enjoying the beauty that was my backyard.

So many things happened that summer that changed the path of my life, only one of which was meeting Ember.

Although Ember and I worked together almost daily at the MTU news bureau, as anyone who knows me and my social-retardation knows, it was a big step for me to ask her to do something after work. Almost like I was asking a boy out on a date, I nervously worried about rejection. Why would this nice, pretty girl possibly want to hang out with me? Lucky for me, she did. On our first “date”, we took a bike ride along the canal and grilled chicken at my apartment.

That summer, as we worked, rode bikes, went shopping, went camping, and went to the beach, we slowly got to know each other. I was there when her relationship with her long-distance boyfriend ended and her relationship with another Tech student began. She was there as my relationship with then-boyfriend ended and my relationship with Jason began. Partners in classwork and partners in bargain shopping, by the time I graduated in 2001, our friendship was firmly cemented.

Our lives gone through a lot of changes since 2001, when we last saw each other on a nearly daily basis. Yet we seem to have one of those rare friendships that continue to grow and evolve, despite distance. We continue to lean on each other in bad times and laugh with each other in the good times.

Today is one of the good times.

A few years ago, Ember began to mention her friend Drew. She talked about him more and more until he became her boyfriend Drew, and finally, her fiance Drew. Today, I will be present as he becomes her husband Drew. Unfortunately, distance has kept me from knowing Drew as well as I would like, but I know we have one very important thing in common, Ember. (OK, we also have motorcycles.) Congratulations Drew and Ember. May your lives be forever filled with the joy you feel today.

…to neglect one’s blog. Sorry for my recent lack of attention. I’m not ignoring you, but you know how the holidays are. It is also the season for travel, and we are heading for Michigan at some point today. Have no fear, I have a few posts planned during our absence. For now, I leave you Ben sitting on the couch like a big boy. Something we have all been getting a big kick out of lately.
