Adventures in pregnancy ~ 16 weeks

Last Sunday, I crossed the 16 week mark and followed it with my 16 week appointment on Monday.

Despite my growing belly, I had gained exactly 0.0 pounds since my 12 week appointment. Finally starting to feel better (hope I’m not jinxing it), I expect that to change soon! My blood pressure is doing fine, and baby’s heartbeat is going strong at 152 bpm.

As I mentioned, my nausea is finally starting to wane, and slowly my energy is returning. I’m feeling some movement now, but it is subtle and requires concentration! I tried using Em’s home doppler on Tuesday, but we could only hear the movement. Stinker was dancing everywhere.

I’m looking forward to my ultrasound, which is scheduled Dec 21. Happy Christmas to me, I get to see my baby :-)

I suppose I am due to take a belly picture, so we’ll see about that this week.

Sammy’s ear update

We were back to the ENT today with Sam. The good news is that his infections are much better. His ruptured ear (right) is completely dry, though not yet healed. The left ear still has fluid, but isn’t red or inflamed. Now, we start on antibiotics through the end of the year. If he gets another infection despite the antibiotic, it means tubes. If he doesn’t, I guess that is good. I’m worried about his poor diaper-rashed behind, but mostly glad he is feeling better.

owwie ears

Since we are about 2 months into this journey, I suppose I should do something to document it. Sam has an ear infection. He has had an ear infection for 2 months. It all started with a trip to FastCare in early October (or late September?), a prescription and ear infection diagnosis. A few weeks later, we were back with the same infection and received the same prescription + drops. When he wasn’t improving a week later, I finally got him in to see our doctor. By this point, we had added a raging yeast infection in the diaper region to the symptoms (courtesy of the antibiotics). Our doc prescribed Zithromax, and we actually saw a few days in which Sam was acting like himself and had some relief. Unfortunately, a week later his ear drum burst. Last Thursday, we were back to the doctor again. This time, we left with different drops and a referral to an ENT.

Some history: Sam gets frequent ear infections, and they are always severe. They often last weeks to months, require several antibiotics, and always result in ruptured ear drums. I was very happy to see the ENT.

Monday, we met with the ENT, and honestly, I was disappointed. He confirmed a continued infection and ruptured drum in the right ear, and fluid but no infection in the left. He sucked the gunk out of the right, instructed us to continue with the drops, and return in a week.

Needless to say, we didn’t make it a week. After extreme crankiness last night and green eye goobers in the left eye last night and this morning, I called the ENT again. The doctor we saw on Monday was out, but his partner wanted us to bring him back in. Despite initial skepticism on the doctor’s part, she confirmed that the left ear is now infected, while the right is still perforated and infected. She sucked out the gunk again and took a culture. She prescribed a new oral antibiotic and different drops. She also talked to us at length about getting tubes put into his ears. I am cautiously hopeful that we now have the winning combination to rid Sammy of his “owwie ears”. I want nothing more than no more pain for my otherwise happy little guy. We return the the ENT on Monday, where I am hopeful we will finally get some positive news and more information about tubes for a long term solution.
